My History of Working to Reduce Prejudicial Behavior
When I am asked about when I first became interested in the dynamics of prejudicial behavior I pause and then relate a story from my childhood. My mother told me that when she was a young lady in the south, sitting in a soda shop across the street from a park to enjoy some refreshment or a treat, a mob came down the street and lynched an African American man in that park. The mob then came into the soda shop and pulled out the wooden furniture and used it to build a fire under the man who they had just lynched. This was a very intense experience for my mother, who was just a young lady at the time that she witnessed this lynching. The emotions and the intensity of her experience were clearly visible as she shared those memories with me and they have not been forgotten.
I have worked with people with disabilities at Crippled Children's Society while I was in college and also worked with the Boy’s Club in a depressed hispanic neighborhood.
As a psychologist, I traveled around the US doing presentations and workshops on reducing prejudices. I have worked for the Federal government, state and city governments, Colleges and Universities in about 25 states. I found the work of Paul Pedersen both interesting and encouraging. I made some adaptations to Pedersen’s Triad Model and presented this in many states, and also presented with Paul Pedersen at the American Counselors Association.
After doing some presentations at Central Washington University it was agreed that I would not accept any monetary payment for my work but instead the University’s media department would produce the videos that are included in this program.
